It is easy to get caught up in things that are actually very trivial. What are the latest styles? What are the celebrities doing? What are they serving at the newest restaurants? While we prattle on about inconsequential matters, very serious issues face our society and our world. Sometimes we must venture past our own everyday lives and consider the issues around us.
- What can we do to make society better? If you are unaware of national and local political candidates, issues that face your own city, the nation and the world and other matters bigger than yourself, you are not living in the real world.
- What issues face our brothers and sisters in other countries? It is easy to believe that life where you live is just like everywhere else. It’s not. Many countries have fought a long, uphill battle to achieve a free democracy, like the Kazakhstan Democracy.
- What should we be doing to protect the environment? Being responsible to the environment is not limited to recycling. Tossing garbage out of a car window, pouring dangerous chemicals down the drain and wasting resources all affect the environment we all share.
- How can we live better to benefit those around us? Consider how your actions affect those around you. Treat other people the way you want to be treated, and the good you do will come back to you!
We don’t have to give up everything we enjoy, but considering the plight of others does several things. Taking an interest in things outside yourself strengthens you as a person. First, it helps us focus on what is real around us, not just our own situation. Second, it helps us to be more grateful for the things we have. Third, it helps us to become better people.
